My Bonsai Tree Journey

June 21 - June 30

Just under 20 days, I was thrilled to witness a tiny stem bursting forth from the soil! Out of the 5 seeds that I have placed in the soil, only 3 of the seeds were able to successfully germinate. Fingers crossed the remaining two seeds will germinate.

The way it grows is unique as the seed is raised to the top of the plant and these tiny stems hold up the seeds until the wind blows the seed away causing the stems to separate apart.

I've given one of the successful seedlings to Jason, and we're excited to embark on a bonsai journey together.

I have built a simple station that consists of a Plant Light and a Smart Plug so that I can make good use of it during the darker days.

Additionally, I'm currently working on a self-watering system using my Raspberry Pi. Unfortunately, the relay that turns on the water pump does not seem to be working so I had to order another relay. I hope it'll work in the end.

For now, I'll be tending to my bonsai babies every Monday, making sure the soil is moist and nourishing. I can't wait to see how they'll flourish in the coming weeks and months. Stay tuned for updates on their progress!"

During my trip to Japan, I picked up a black pine bonsai tree-growing kit. I've always been fascinated by the art of bonsai. Ever since I watched "The Karate Kid" as a child, those miniature trees Mr. Miyagi meticulously styled captivated my imagination. I just had to have one of my own!

The bonsai tree symbolizes inner peace, patience, self-care, and strong roots that allow it to grow healthily in any direction. These are values that resonate deeply in our lives.

My understanding of bonsai cultivation was limited. I discovered that growing a bonsai requires immense patience. It can take around 5 to 8 years for a bonsai to reach a reasonable size.

I plan to grow my bonsai indoors, even though it's recommended to be grown outdoors. Occasionally, I'll take it outside for some fresh air when the weather is nice.

To give my bonsai the best care, I might build a station using smart technologies like a self-watering system and a smart plant light to emulate outdoor sunlight. Let's see how it goes!

Stay tuned as I continue my bonsai planting journey.

P.S. I got a signed copy of "Karate Kid and Me" by Ralph Macchio. It's a fantastic read!
